2026 - 2027 Academic Year
Programme Overview
For the first time in its history, Shan State Buddhist University (SSBU) launched the Bachelor of Arts (BA) Programme in Pāli and Buddhist Studies two years ago — a programme delivered entirely in English. This programme carries a mission to train our students to acquire not only fundamental knowledge in the Tipiṭaka through the original Pāli texts, but also critical thinking skills enabling them to apply the Buddhist teachings adaptively in serving the Buddhasāsanā and humanity at large.
We strongly believe that, in this information-explosive AI era, students should receive proper guidance to initiate self-directed learning alongside their own research, enabling them to decide the breadth and depth of subjects they wish to explore. This student-centred pedagogy, adopted by us, will help create a confident, creative, and independent generation that will continue to hold the torch of Dhamma in a rapidly changing world.

Methods of assessment vary across individual courses. They typically involve summaries, regular essays, coursework essays, special assignments, group and individual presentations, class participation, quizzes and written examinations. Most courses are assessed through only one to three of these methods.
Learning Outcomes:
Students graduated from this BA programme can continue undertaking their Master of Arts (MA) in Pāli and Buddhist studies or related disciplines in SSBU, or in other universities in Myanmar or overseas.
Also, with the Dhamma knowledge and language skills learned, they can work to become a Dhamma teacher in any local Buddhist school/institute or to become a Buddhist missionary abroad. With sufficient working knowledge of Pāli and English, they can further aspire to become a Pāli-Myanmar-English/Pāli-Shan-English translator and interpreter. They can as well apply the Dhamma knowledge to other contemporary specialties that benefit society such as in counselling, psychotherapy, and modern sciences.
