The Most Venerable Mrauk-U Sayadaw, a renowned meditation teacher dedicated to both Pariyatti (scriptural learning) and Paṭipatti (meditative practice), visited the Shan State Buddhist University (SSBU) today, accompanied by his devotees.
Members of the Sangha, nuns, staff and students warmly welcomed the Most Venerable in the KBZ International Meeting Hall, where they paid respects and requested a Sammodanīya Gāthā (admonition speech).
In his address, Mrauk-U Sayadaw cited canonical examples of the Buddha’s meetings with visitors, highlighting how the Buddha would greet them and offer words of enlightenment. He emphasized the inseparability of Pariyatti and Paṭipatti, which together lead to Paṭivedha—the realization of the Dhamma. He encouraged all present to practice according to the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, which, he noted, are capable of leading to attainment in this very life, within the dispensation of the Gotama Buddha.
Following the Dhamma talk, the Most Venerable Oxford Sayadaw, Rector of SSBU, briefed Mrauk-U Sayadaw on the university’s academic programs and campus life. Pali and meditation are core subjects for all students, with three mediums of instruction:
• Shan for poetic-style Shan manuscripts
• Burmese for the Postgraduate Diploma in Library and Information Management
• English for Pali and Buddhist Studies
For practice, SSBU students undertake two meditation retreats from different traditions during term break.
The Rector also inquired about Rakkhapura University, founded by Mrauk-U Sayadaw, who shared that construction is now 70% complete.
The visit concluded with SSBU offering a robe and gifts to Mrauk-U Sayadaw and showing him around the campus, including the meeting hall and the library.
This marks the Sayadaw’s third visit to SSBU.
