Virtual Open Day of Shan State Buddhist University

    Academic Year 2026–2027

    6 December 2025

    Online via Zoom

Shan State Buddhist University (SSBU) successfully held its Virtual Open Day (VOD) for the Academic Year 2026–2027 on 6 December 2025, from 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm (Myanmar Time) via the Zoom platform. This online academic event was organised to provide prospective students, monastics, scholars, and members of the wider public with an overview of the university’s academic mission, educational structure, and learning environment. Participants joined from various regions, reflecting SSBU’s growing role as a centre for Buddhist higher education within Myanmar and beyond.

The session commenced with opening remarks by Ven. Sayādaw Dr. Pandavābhipāla, Head of the Registrar’s Office, who formally welcomed the participants and introduced the purpose of the event. This was followed by an address from the Acting Dean of SSBU, Ven. Sayādaw Dr. Pannabhoga, who presented an overview of the university’s academic vision and its commitment to preserving and transmitting the Theravāda Buddhist tradition through structured education.

A documentary video introducing the SSBU campus was then presented, offering viewers insight into the university’s physical environment, academic facilities, and daily student life. The formal welcome address was delivered by the Rector, Most Venerable Sayādaw Dr. Khammai Dhammasami (DPhil, Oxford), who emphasised the importance of disciplined study, ethical conduct, and scholarly inquiry as integral components of Buddhist education.

The central component of the Virtual Open Day was the presentation of SSBU’s academic programmes. Current students introduced the Bachelor’s Degree, Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s Degree, and Doctoral programmes in Pāli and Buddhist Studies, explaining their academic structure, subject areas, and expected learning outcomes. These presentations enabled participants to gain a clearer understanding of the academic pathways available at SSBU and the scope of study offered at each level.

An additional session introduced the Postgraduate Diploma in Library and Information Management, outlining its academic framework and its importance in supporting Buddhist scholarship through the management, preservation, and dissemination of textual resources.

A session on Life at SSBU was conducted by current students, who shared reflections on monastic life, academic practice, and communal learning at the university. This was followed by a detailed explanation of the Admission process, including academic requirements, documentation, and application procedures, thereby providing clarity and guidance for prospective applicants.

The event concluded with a Question and Answer Session, during which participants raised academic and administrative enquiries. The Virtual Open Day formally ended with closing remarks by Ven. Sayādaw Dr. Pannabhoga, who expressed gratitude to the speakers and attendees.

The Virtual Open Day served as a comprehensive academic introduction to Shan State Buddhist University and reinforced the institution’s commitment to Buddhist education grounded in tradition and informed by academic rigor.
